Neuro-psychoanalysis and Mind-Body Treatments for PTSD:
Interoception - The Royal Road to Trauma Schemata
By Patricia L Gerbarg and Richard P Brown
Breath-based mind-body practices activate interoceptive pathways providing access to trauma schemata. Skillful use of specific breath patterns can facilitate resolution of psychological and physical symptoms of trauma. Dr. Gerbarg will present research evidence of neurophysiological mechanisms, clinical studies of survivors of mass disasters, and case material to illustrate the therapeutic potential of practices she and Dr. Brown are developing to facilitate recovery from trauma. Dr. Brown will lead an experiential session introducing some of these practices. Integration of mind-body practices with verbal therapies will also be discussed.
Patricia L. Gerbarg, MD, Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College, is a graduate of Harvard Medical School (1975) and the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute (1992).
Richard P. Brown, MD, Associate Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, has a consultation practice in biological psychiatry and is a certified teacher of Aikido, Qigong, Yoga, and Meditation.
Dr. Brown and Dr. Gerbarg have authored many articles, textbook chapters and books on Integrative Psychiatry, including "How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care," RP Brown, PR Gerbarg, PR Muskin (WW Norton, 2009). Their website is www.haveahealthymind.com.
